China opens gates to US beef imports

Beijing (AFP) – China opened its gates to US beef imports this week, giving American cattle farmers much sought-after access to the country’s massive market following a 14-year ban.

Shipments of eligible US beef have been allowed to enter China since Tuesday, the General Adminstration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement.

A recording of an internal briefing at Apple earlier this month obtained by The Outline sheds new light on how far the most valuable company in the world will go to prevent leaks about new products.

The briefing, titled “Stopping Leakers – Keeping Confidential at Apple,” was led by Director of Global Security David Rice, Director of Worldwide Investigations Lee Freedman, and Jenny Hubbert, who works on the Global Security communications and training team.

According to the hour-long presentation, Apple’s Global Security team employs an undisclosed number of investigators around the world to prevent information from reaching competitors, counterfeiters, and the press, as well as hunt down the source when leaks do occur. Some of these investigators have previously worked at U.S. intelligence agencies like the National Security Agency (NSA), law enforcement agencies like the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service, and in the U.S. military.

New Utah facility will be able to power a Bountiful-size city by digesting food waste, turning it into natural gas | The Salt Lake Tribune

North Salt Lake • State and local officials broke ground for Utah’s first food digester Thursday morning in a project aimed at reducing landfill waste and harnessing unused renewable energy.

The North Salt Lake facility, to be opened in late 2018, will deploy anaerobic digesters to grind and liquify food waste, then use water, heat and bacteria to convert it into methane gas to be used as natural gas and bio-solids to be converted into fertilizer.

The project, called Wasatch Resource Recovery, is a cooperative partnership between Salt Lake City-based ALPRO Energy & Water and the South Davis Sewer District and will enlist Utah businesses statewide to send their food waste to the facility.

Delta, Bank of America drop ‘Caesar’ sponsorship over Trump death – NY Daily News

Delta Airlines and Bank of America pulled out of their sponsorship of New York’s Public Theater on Sunday over a production of “Julius Caesar” that reimagines the main character as President Trump.

Shortly after Delta, who was a four-year sponsor, made its announcement, Bank of America yanked its support as well.

The Shakespeare in the Park play tells the story of the leader assassinated by Roman senators over the fear that he’s becoming too tyrannical, but rather than the original setting, the production stages Caesar (Gregg Henry) and his wife, Calpurnia, (Tina Benko) with Donald and Melania Trump lookalikes.

Henry, who already played a Trump stand-in on “Scandal” last year, models his Caesar almost perfectly after the man in the Oval Office. He meets his end after being stabbed to death by women and minorities on stage.

Benko, similarly, plays Calpurnia with a thick Slavic accent, much like Melania herself.

The recreation has drawn ire from those who say the show promotes violence against the President. Those critics include the President’s son, Donald Trump Jr.

“Danger knows full well that Caesar is more dangerous than he,” reads a sign promoting the production.

“I wonder how much of this ‘art’ is funded by taxpayers? Serious question, when does ‘art’ become political speech & does that change things?” the younger Trump tweeted Sunday in response to a Fox News article that accused the show of depicting the assassination of the President.

Delta, which donates between $100,000 and $499,000 annually, according to Deadline, pulled its sponsorship Sunday afternoon.

GOP demand for ‘Hamilton’ tix cooled after Pence visit

“No matter what your political stance may be, the graphic staging of Julius Caesar at this summer’s Free Shakespeare in the Park does not reflect Delta Air Lines’ values,” a company spokesman said in a statement.

“Their artistic and creative direction crossed the line on the standards of good taste. We have notified them of our decision to end our sponsorship as the official airline of The Public Theater effective immediately.”

Bank of America, one of The Public Theaters’s dozen corporate sponsors, offered similar reasoning.

“I wonder how much of this ‘art’ is funded by taxpayers? Serious question, when does ‘art’ become political speech & does that change things?” Donald Trump Jr. tweeted Sunday morning in response to a Fox News article that accused the show of depicting the assassination of the President.

“Bank of America supports art programs worldwide, including an 11-year partnership with The Public Theater and Shakespeare in the Park,” a spokeswoman told the Daily News. “The Public Theater chose to present Julius Caesar in a way that was intended to provoke and offend. Had this intention been made known to us, we would have decided not to sponsor it.”

The show does include a warning about the violent nature of the assassination. On The Public Theater’s website, artistic director Oskar Eustis said the production should not be taken literally.

“Julius Caesar can be read as a warning parable to those who try to fight for democracy by undemocratic means,” he said. “To fight the tyrant does not mean imitating him.”

In a statement to WPIX 11, he said “anyone seeing our production of ‘Julius Caesar’ will realize it in no way advocates violence towards anyone.”

Eustis previously told The News that President Trump was more than welcome to see his shows, including “Hamilton,” which debuted at The Public Theater in February 2015 and moved to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre the following August.

“He’s the President of the United States,” he told The News. “I’m not going to say no to the President to see our show.”

The artistic director said he’d hosted politicians before, including Vice President Mike Pence, who was booed at a production of the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical.

The controversy comes just days after comedian Kathy Griffin found herself embroiled in scandal after posing for a photo holding the decapitated head of a fake Trump.

A 2012 retelling of “Julius Caesar” set the play under Barack Obama’s presidency amid “Occupy Rome” protests at the capital. No sponsors pulled out of that production.

“Julius Caesar” previews began in May. The play officially opens Monday and runs through June 18 at the Delacorte Theater.

First New Coal Mine of Trump Era Opens in Pennsylvania | Fox News Insider

President Trump lauded the opening of the nation’s first new coal mine in recent memory.

Corsa Coal Company will operate the mine in Somerset County, Pa. – outside of Pittsburgh.

Corsa CEO George Dethlefsen said the mine will be a boon to the struggling local economy.

He praised Trump’s easing of regulations and encouragement for fossil fuel exploration.

Dethlefsen told Leland Vittert that for the 70 positions available in the mine, 400 people applied.

“It’s a hard day’s work every day, but it’s worth it,” one miner said.

Vittert said the news contrasts with Hillary Clinton’s message that she would “put a lot of coal miners out of work.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf (D), who endorsed Clinton, joined the mine company in watching a video message from Trump commemorating the occasion.

Faking ‘wokeness’: how advertising targets millennial liberals for profit | US news | The Guardian

Despite all appearances, these videos are not public-service campaigns. Instead, they are advertisements for some of the most blockbuster brands around: for the car company Kia, for Airbnb, and for the phone carrier Verizon, whose ad campaign involves partnering with Girls who Code. These companies are now gesturing at liberal values through their messaging. If television is waking up politically, with shows such as The Handmaid’s Tale, advertisements seem to be far ahead.

Why is this the case? For starters, advertisers are constantly looking for future markets, and younger Americans are ostensibly more liberal than their parents. Brand loyalty starts in the cradle and ends in the grave, as I wrote in my first book, Branded: The Buying and Selling of Teenagers. The increasingly progressive messages in marketing campaigns are clearly a mercenary attempt to entice millennials: they are trying to be “woke”.

United Airlines ends flights to Venezuela, further isolating…

WASHINGTON, June 3 (Reuters) – United Airlines will end its daily flight service to Venezuela in July, further isolating the crisis-hit South American country from international travel after the exit of many major airlines in recent years.

Many airlines have left after a protracted dispute over billions of dollars they say the government owes them. They say President Nicolas Maduro’s administration has failed to reimburse companies in hard currency for ticket sales in local currency, as per strict currency controls in the socialist nation.

Press Coverage of Bilderberg Highest Ever »

Remember it was only a few years ago that the mainstream media denied Bilderberg even existed.

But now, numerous news outlets including the BBC, Sky News, the Guardian and others are openly discussing the meeting in Chantilly, Virginia, where over 130 of the world’s top tech elites, bankers, politicians, royalty, media owners and intelligence agents meet in secret for four days without an official record taken of the proceedings.

“The 2017 edition of Bilderberg, long a byword for secret societies and globally conspiratorial behaviour, wraps up its four-day sojourn in the western Fairfax County spot of Chantilly today and we are, as per usual, none the wiser about what went down in those hallowed conference rooms,” reported NewsTalk.com. “…First held in the titular Netherlands hotel in 1954, ostensibly to foster better relations between Europe and North America, Bilderberg has been an annual, travelling summer affair in the six decades since.”

Why Do Gas Station Prices Constantly Change? Blame the Algorithm – WSJ

ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands—One recent afternoon at a Shell-branded station on the outskirts of this Dutch city, the price of a gallon of unleaded gas started ticking higher, rising more than 3½ cents by closing time. A little later, a competing station 3 miles down the road raised its price about the same amount.

The two stations are among thousands of companies that use artificial-intelligence software to set prices. In doing so, they are testing a fundamental precept of the market economy.
