Trump ends charm offensive in Italy with G7 meeting | Daily Mail Online

Donald Trump started his first overseas presidential journey as a rock star, walking down a red carpet when he arrived in Saudi Arabia and leaving the country with a coveted $100 billion arms deal.

One week and three countries later, the president risked losing his momentum in liberal Europe – where it was his predecessor, Barack Obama, who once received a hero’s welcome.

The setting could hardly be more dramatic: Friday’s G7 meetings kicked off in the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, an ancient Greek stone amphitheatre on the island of Sicily that dates from the 3rd century B.C. – complete with a nine-plane flyover trailing the Italian tricolor hues.

Gianforte charged with election-eve assault

Late on the night before a hotly contested special election, U.S. House candidate Greg Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault after a national political reporter alleged the Republican “body slammed” him, sending a last-minute shock wave through the race.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office was summoned to Gianforte’s campaign headquarters at 212 Discovery Lane in Bozeman.

The reporter, Ben Jacobs of The Guardian, claimed on Twitter that Gianforte assaulted him.

Lawyers for a Russian tech mogul suing online news site BuzzFeed for defamation will seek within the next two weeks to take sworn testimony from its editor and several reporters.

Killing C.I.A. Informants, China Crippled U.S. Spying Operations – NYTimes.com

Current and former American officials described the intelligence breach as one of the worst in decades. It set off a scramble in Washington’s intelligence and law enforcement agencies to contain the fallout, but investigators were bitterly divided over the cause. Some were convinced that a mole within the C.I.A. had betrayed the United States. Others believed that the Chinese had hacked the covert system the C.I.A. used to communicate with its foreign sources. Years later, that debate remains unresolved.

At the Pentagon, overpriced fuel sparks allegations — and denials — of a slush fund – The Washington Post

The Pentagon has generated almost $6 billion over the past seven years by charging the armed forces excessive prices for fuel and has used the money — called the “bishop’s fund” by some critics — to bolster mismanaged or underfunded military programs, documents show.

Since 2015, the Defense Department has tapped surpluses from its fuel accounts for $80 million to train Syrian rebels, $450 million to shore up a prescription-drug program riddled with fraud and $1.4 billion to cover unanticipated expenses from the war in Afghanistan, according to military accounting records.
