Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley launches investigation of Google

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley’s office on Monday issued a subpoena to Google as part of an investigation into whether the tech giant is violating Missouri’s consumer protection and anti-trust laws.

The investigation delves into Google’s collection of data on users and whether Google, the world’s most popular search engine, has manipulated search results at the expense of competitors, according to a release from Hawley’s office.

“When a company has access to as much consumer information as Google does, it’s my duty to ensure they are using it appropriately,” said Hawley, a Republican who is mounting a campaign for U.S. Senate. “I will not let Missouri consumers and businesses be exploited by industry giants.”

Patrick Lenihan, Google’s spokesman, said in an email that the company has not yet received the subpoena. Lenihan said Google has “strong privacy protections in place for our users and continue to operate in a highly competitive and dynamic environment.”

Google’s AI is binge-watching human behavior

Google has curated a set of YouTube clips to help machines learn how humans exist in the world. The AVAs, or “atomic visual actions,” are three-second clips of people doing everyday things like drinking water, taking a photo, playing an instrument, hugging, standing or cooking.

Each clip labels the person the AI should focus on, along with a description of their pose and whether they’re interacting with an object or another human.

“Despite exciting breakthroughs made over the past years in classifying and finding objects in images, recognizing human actions still remains a big challenge,” Google wrote in a recent blog post describing the new dataset. “This is due to the fact that actions are, by nature, less well-defined than objects in videos.”

The catalog of 57,600 clips only highlights 80 actions but labels more than 96,000 humans. Google pulled clips from popular movies, emphasizing that they drew from a “variety of genres and countries of origin.”

If there are two people in a clip, each person is labeled separately, so a machine can learn that two people are needed to shake hands with one another or that sometimes humans kiss when they also hug.

The technology will help Google analyze years and years of video and could also help advertisers better target consumers, based on the actions a person is more likely to watch.

Ultimately, the goal is to teach computers social visual intelligence, according to an accompanying research paper which describes it as, “understanding what humans are doing, what might they do next and what they are trying to achieve.”

Google May Be at the Mercy of Its Enemies in EU Antitrust Battle

How will the European Union’s antitrust cop determine whether Google meets her demand? She’ll see what its enemies say.

Alphabet Inc.’s Google has just one week to meet the deadline of an EU order to stop illegal conduct in the way it displays shopping results in search. After leveling a $2.7 billion fine in June, EU regulators may threaten more penalties against the search engine after the Sept. 28 deadline, EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in an interview at Bloomberg’s New York headquarters on Thursday. If Google fails to give equal treatment for other shopping services, the company could face recurring fines of up to 5 percent of daily global revenue.

Google and Facebook fined if terror material not removed

Google and Facebook face punishing fines unless they remove terrorist propaganda within a two-hour limit.

Theresa May will use a summit in New York tonight to warn the technology giants and their rivals that her patience is running out over their failure to clamp down on jihadi groups.

She will say they have only a month to make progress. If they don’t, the Government will legislate to make them liable for extremist content on their sites. Delay in removing the material would trigger fines.

How Google is secretly recording YOU through your mobile

If you own an Android phone, it’s likely that you’ve used Google’s Assistant, which is similar to Apple’s Siri.

Google says it only turns on and begins recording when you utter the words “OK Google”.

But a Sun investigation has found that the virtual assistant is a little hard of hearing.

In some cases, just saying “OK” in conversation prompted it to switch on your phone and record around 20 seconds of audio.

Google Working with Liberal Groups to Snuff Out Conservative Websites?

Google revealed in a blog post that it is now using machine learning to document “hate crimes and events” in America. They’ve partnered with liberal groups like ProPublica, BuzzFeed News, and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to make information about “hate events” easily accessible to journalists. And now, there are troubling signs that this tool could be used to ferret out writers and websites that run afoul of the progressive orthodoxy.

Google’s DeepMind creates an AI with ‘imagination’ | WIRED UK

In two new research papers, the British AI firm, which was acquired by Google in 2014, describes new developments for “imagination-based planning” to AI. Its attempt to create algorithms that simulate the distinctly human ability to construct a plan could eventually help to produce software and hardware capable of solving complex tasks more efficiently.

Google Fined Record $2.7 Billion in E.U. Antitrust Ruling – NYTimes.com

Google suffered a major blow on Tuesday after European antitrust officials fined the search giant a record $2.7 billion for unfairly favoring some of its own services over those of rivals.

The penalty, of 2.4 billion euros, highlights the aggressive stance that European officials have taken in regulating many of the world’s largest technology companies, going significantly further than their American counterparts.

By levying the fine against Google — more than double the previous largest penalty in this type of antitrust case — Margrethe Vestager, the European Union’s antitrust chief, also laid claim to being the Western world’s most active regulator of digital services, an industry still dominated by Silicon Valley.

Google launches robo-tool to flag hate speech online

Google’s freely available software, known as Perspective, is being tested by a range of news organisations, including The New York Times, The Guardian and The Economist, as a way to help simplify the jobs of humans reviewing comments on their stories.
“News organisations want to encourage engagement and discussion around their content, but find that sorting through millions of comments to find those that are trolling or abusive takes a lot of money, labour and time,” said Jared Cohen, president of Jigsaw, the Google social incubator that built the tool.

Google has banned 200 publishers since it passed a new policy against fake news

Google kicked 200 publishers off one of its ad networks in the fourth quarter, partly in response to the proliferation of fake news sites.
The company banned the publishers from its AdSense network, an ad placement service that automatically serves text and display ads on participating sites based on its audience. The ban was part of an update to an existing policy that prohibits sites that mislead users with their content.
